(VEE) PAYING HOMAGE TO EMANUELE ARTOM IN BRUSSELS

(VELINO) Roma, 13 Jan - The Italian Cultural Institute in Brussels will dedicate a special event to Emanuele Artom on the Holocaust Remembrance Day. The event, which will take place on January 26 at 7:00 pm, will be attended by historian Guri Shwarz, the curator of Emanuele Artom's diaries ("Diaries of a Jewish Partisan. January 1940-February 1944", Turin, Bollati Boringhieri, 2008) writer Alessandro Musto, author of the novel "Via Artom, Rome", RAI Eri, 2016; and film director Francesco Momberto. The debate will be followed by the screening of Francesco Momberto's film "Emanuele Artom, il ragazzo di Via Sacchi" ( 58' - 2011). Emanuele Artom was born in Aosta in 1915 in a bourgeois Jewish family. He attended the D'azeglio High School in Turin, where he studied under Augusto Monti. He enrolled in the Italian Literature Department of the University of Turin, with a major in history. With his brother Ennio, he worked as animator in a Jewish cultural club and worked for the Einaudi publishing house. After Italy signed the unconditional armistice on 8 September, Emanuele officially joined the Action Party and at the beginning of November 1943 joined the Resistance, participating in actions carried out in Val Pellice and Val Germanasca. On March 25, 1944 he was captured by the Nazis and being identified as a political commissioner as well as a Jew, he was submitted to unspeakable tortures. On March 31 he was transferred to Carceri Nuove in Turin, where he died on April 7 from the consequences of the violence suffered. His body was allegedly buried near Stupinigi but has never been found. vel
