San Donato Milanese (Milan) - Eni has made a new oil discovery through well 7219/9-2, drilled at a water depth of 336 meters, in the prospect known as Kayak of the PL532 license (Statoil 50%, operator, Eni 30%, Petoro 20%). The well is located approximately 23 kilometers south-west of the Johan Castberg discovery well, approximately 226 kilometers north-west of Hammerfest. The aim of exploring the Kayak prospect, a statement explains, was to test the mining potential of the Cretaceous sequence.
The well detected oil mineralization in two sandstone intervals, of 27 meter and 18 meter thickness, in the Cretaceous sequence. According to preliminary estimates, the size of the discovery is between 100 and 180 million barrels of oil reserves in place and 25 - 50 million barrels of recoverable oil. Extensive data collection and fluid sampling has been carried out in the well. The Kayak discovery is yet another achievement for Eni's "near field" strategy which, if successful, will enable the exploitation of reserves through working synergies with future production infrastructures. Eni has been operating in Norway since 1965, where it currently produces 180,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day through its subsidiary Eni Norge.
