Cagliari - Sardinia was awarded the "Best Beach destination Europe" prize on the occasion of the 24th edition of the International Travel and Tourism Exhibition (MITT) in Moscow. MITT, the most important tourist fair in Eastern Europe and one of the five largest fairs on the continent, showcased the Region Sardinia and its traditional stand "Sardegna Endless Island."
Twenty accredited operators from the region were hosted at the Expocenter fairgrounds, representing hotels, hotel chains and other hotel accommodation facilities, tourist agencies, tour operators and bus services, Meridiana airline and a natural mall located in Stintino, in the province of Sassari. "This latest award confirms the excellence of our coasts. They are increasingly appreciated at the international level so much so that they have become a very popular destination also in an emerging market such as Russia. Our uncontaminated environment, which the region and all local authorities have preserved through the years, our beautiful beaches and our crystal-clear water are the main features and the strength of our tourism offer: the new regional development model is based on conservation of the environment and the enhancement of sustainable tourism, " said the newly appointed Regional Councillor for Tourism, Handicraft and Trade, Barbara Angiolas.
Moscow's International Travel and Tourism Exhibition hosted 1,800 companies from 190 destinations. In 2016 the fair recorded 28,000 visitors in three days, of which three quarters were tour operators. According to a report by the Regional Tourism Council, there is a high-quality demand from Russia, of which 50% is addressed to four- and five-star hotels. Traditionally, it is beaches and golfing and sailing facilities that represent the product which is in the highest demand. A little over 19,000 tourists visited Sardinia from Russia in the first 10 months of 2016: with an average stay of six days and a half, there were nearly 126,000 presences generated in the hotels on the island, up two percent from a year earlier. Last year Russia ranked 11th, just missing the top 10 international markets in Sardinia.
