Rome - TIM (Telecom Italia) and Ericsson announced that they are enhancing their collaboration with a Memorandum of Understanding to develop a 5G technology that aims move on swiftly towards the new network of the future. A joint communique reported that Tim and Ericsson have committed to share expertise, projects, laboratories and resources to plan, experiment and implement technological components for the new 5G network, required to create a complete and open ecosystem for a new generation digital services.
The MoU will assign tasks directly to the research and innovation facilities of both firms. It will focus on the planning and testing of access infrastructures, their antenna systems and solutions for the virtualisation of the network, also through a joint partnership with Italian and European research projects and the integration of service platforms for on-site experimentation of innovative Use Cases.
The communique reported that the 5G system will also have a speed hitting peaks of tens of Gbit/s for ultraHD services and cloud computing solutions. It will also decrease the latency in communication, which will drop down to only a few milliseconds, ascribe reliability for mission-critical services, and provide a service density with the possibility of connecting up to 100,000 terminals per cell. These characteristics will make 5G the benchmark mobile network for new generation digital services (such as virtual reality) and the industrial internet (robotics, manufacturing, health, environment, and self-driving logistics). The agreement will enhance the '5G for Italy' initiative, initiated in 2016 by Tim and Ericsson, for the definition of an ecosystem of experimental industrial partners. It confirms the commitment of both firms to innovate technologies and networks that foster the socio-economic growth of Italy's cultural, economic and innovation system.
