Tripoli - The Council of Libyan Ulema has issued a statement arguing that the agreements signed at Skhirat to form a government of national reconciliation are "against Sharia law." The guardians of legal and religious tradition in Islam have come together to debate the United Nations-backed initiative, also supported by the international community, to form a body that represents all Libyans. According to the Ulema, the new Libyan government "violates Sharia", whereas "internal dialogue in Libya as expressed in the document of Tunis, established at the Malta summit, which was attended by the presidents of the Tobruk parliament and the Congress of Tripoli, should be supported." As a solution to the crisis, the council has asked the Parliament and Congress "to announce the creation of a government of national unity at once" (AGI)
