(AGI) London, Nov 10 - The Italian Cultural Institute in Londonhas organised a performance by songwriter Vinicio Capossela totake place on Tuesday evening. The artist will spend two daysin the United Kingdom, will meet the Italian community, andwill perform for a British audience. The artist, who revealedto the entire world that even socks go to heaven (the theme ofhis popular song), launched his new book published byFeltrinelli, 'Il paese dei coppoloni' (The Town of Coppoloni)on Monday night at the Institute. He will also perform at thepopular Clapham Grand on Tuesday evening. In addition, TheTimes has devoted ample space to the artist, defining him as apoet and 'Italy's answer to Tom Waits.' Now Capossela will tryto conquer London, not an easy audience. The concert is part ofthe tour Qu'Art de Siecle and goes hand in hand with theartist's latest book. Capossela explained that 'paese deicoppoloni' is situated in the middle of a valley, a town whichis almost free from history. It is clearly inspired by CarloLevi's 'Christ Stopped at Eboli', although the book contains aclear interpretation of the 49-year-old artist's view of hisworld. Born in Germany to parents from Irpinia in the Campaniaregion, he developed his artistic skills in Emilia-Romagna.Capossela seeks to present "Italy as a country that has beenemptied. It is a void full of voices and stories fightingagainst new threats of deprivation." It is a tribute also tothe rural culture, with the book's cover showing a clock thathas stopped at the time of the 1980 earthquake. "This is asymbol, but it is also an aggression, because under the handsof the clock there is time outside of history." The work isalso a tribute to the many Italian migrants the artist ismeeting during these days in London. "There is always somethingone takes along when leaving. Just think about music. Manytypes of music stem from an exodus. Songs and stories can helpdissolution and grant a sense of continuity," the artistexplained. Capossela will sing all about this Tuesday eveningat Clapham, just next to the Thames. The artist's tour toLondon was organised by TIJ Events, an agency which alsoorganised the concert of the progressive Italian rock backPremiata Forneria Marconi, to take place Wednesday at CamdenTown's Dingwalls.. .
