(AGI) Rome, Dec 1 - They were the years of the European Union'sbirth and the war in Bosnia. Twenty years ago, while teenagerswent mad for Oasis, Sony introduced a console that wouldrevolutionise the concept of videogames: the PlayStation. Averitable social phenomenon that soon reached millions ofhouses throughout the world. It was Dec. 3 1994 when, in Japan,a console with a CD-rom was launched which would foreverreplace the cartridges of traditional videogames such asNintendo and Sega Master System. The 32-bit console with 3Dcomputer graphics managed to seduce over 100 million people. Itreached Europe the following year, on Sept. 29 1995. ThePlayStation was immediately a global success and is still onetoday, as confirmed by sales figures for the latest version,the PS4, which stand at over 30 million. In the last 20 years,the four versions of the Japanese console have all beensuccessful. The PS2, for example, introduced a DVD-ROM in 2000which allowed users to play videogames, watch films and listento music. The videogame went beyond the confined space ofchildren's bedrooms to become the entertainment hub for thewhole family. The PS2 had record-breaking worldwide sales of155 million. The subsequent PS3, which was launched on Japaneseand American markets in 2006 and in Europe in 2007, reachedover 80 million consumers within a few years, thanks also tothe introduction of HD graphics and a Wi-Fi connection, whichhas allowed people to play each other on-line from anywhere inthe world.. .
