UNESCO grants recognition to Sardinia's Tepilora park

Cagliari - An area of Sardinia's regional natural Park of Tepilora and the territories of the Rio Posada and Motalbo have been recognised as 'Biosphere Santuary', in accordance with UNESCO's Man and Biosphere programme. The acknowledgement will be officially awarded on June 14 in Paris at the Place de Fontenoy before the following: the regional counsellor for the environment, Donatello Spano; the mayors of the area; the president of the Park of Tepilora; the Forestas managers; and the Director General of the Ministry of the Environment's 'Protection of Nature and of the Sea', Maria Carmela Giarratano.

The 'Man and Biosphere' programme (MAB) was founded in 1971 during the 16th General UNESCO Conference to support the use of sustainable and rational resources and the preservation of the biosphere, with the aim of encouraging the developing a formulaic balance between man and the environment. In Italy, the area of the regional Tepilora Park and the territories of Rio Posada and Montalbo will be the 15th sanctuary acknowledged. In 2016, the acknowledgement was given to the Parco del Po and the Collina Torinese.
